My WebRTC predictions for 2025

Tsahi whips out his crystal ball for yet another year in a row to tell us what lies ahead for WebRTC and multimedia in 2025. He got roughly half of his prediction for 2024 right, which is quite good! If his track record continues, then we have here a great list of things to look forward to in 2025.

OpenAI o1 and new tools for developers

OpenAI keeps up the steady stream of new features including o1 API support, new Go and Java SDKs, better fine-tuning, and… WebRTC support! Just as we predicted based on the recent job postings, WebRTC is having its moment at OpenAI, a trend that is very likely to continue.

The WISH Working Group: Server-Offer vs. Client-Offer Debate

If you are into drama happening in pull requests and standardization meetings (I know I am!), then I have the thing just for you - the latest IETF WISH Working Group heated argument. The argument includes some familiar faces from the multimedia bubble like Dan Jenkins and Lorenzo Miniero, and the main topic is the inclusion of server-side SDP offers in the WHEP (WebRTC-HTTP Egress Protocol) spec. If you are interested, then I recommend reading through the pull request linked in the article.

The MoQ Onion

The latest article from Luke sheds light on “the most critical, and least documented” aspect of MoQ. It mainly focuses on networking, browser compatibility, and multimedia. As the guy who had the guts to fork the entire spec as he grew impatient with the IETF, he certainly has a lot of interesting things to say. I think everyone can learn something from this range of topics.

...AND IT'S BUILT WITH MEMBRANE!

Michał Śledź

SOFTWARE ENGINEER @ SOFTWARE MANSION

We love seeing you working on your own projects that use our libraries under the hood. We know that playing with multimedia is not an easy task and are grateful for any feedback and submitted issues, even though we sometimes might be slow with responding or fixing bugs.

Below we gathered a couple of projects we saw in the last month somewhere on the Internet. We hope they will grow in the nearest future!

Algora.tv

Open-source Twitch for developers. This one wasn’t created in the last month but we can’t miss a chance to mention it whenever possible. Also, there are bounties available! Built with Membrane Framework.

Google Gemini Live API integration

A similar project, but based on Elevenlabs. If you would like to join it, we are looking for someone to contribute an Encoder module to the Xav library. Built with Elixir WebRTC.

A YEAR IN REVIEW:
2024 AT SOFTWARE MANSION MULTIMEDIA & AI TEAMS

Maciej Rys

TECH LEAD @ SOFTWARE MANSION

Let’s be honest, 2024 wasn’t exactly smooth sailing — for us or the industry as a whole — but we managed to weather the storm and deliver some remarkable releases.

Throughout the year, we shared detailed documentation and blog posts about specific launches, so in this article, I’d like to focus on the milestones and events that truly broadened our tech horizons. Without further ado, let’s dive into our 2024 wrap-up!

2025 CONFS TO HAVE A LOOK AT

Kasia Smoleń

MARKETING SPECIALIST @ SOFTWARE MANSION

New year, new opportunities, and of course, new WebRTC and Elixir conferences to keep on your radar. Below are our top picks, so if you join in, it’s likely we’ll run into each other. 😉

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

FOSDEM

First up in 2025 is FOSDEM in Brussels (1-2 February), and it's definitely one to mark on your calendar. It’s a free dev event, focusing on open source solutions. This year’s edition will feature 981 speakers, 939 events, and 74 tracks, covering a range of topics – from streaming and WebRTC to quantum computing.

KRAKÓW, POLAND

ElixirConf EU & US

Next up, ElixirConf EU will take place in Kraków, Poland, on May 15-16. You’ll be able to connect with Elixir’s core teams and join training on a range of topics like LiveView, Ash, Instrumenting, AI+Video, or LiveView Native, with one day of virtual classes and one day in person.

If you can’t make it to Europe, there’s also a US edition. The exact dates for ElixirConf US 2025 haven’t been set yet, but you can check out last year’s event below for a taste of what’s to come.

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

IBC 2025

IBC Amsterdam will be back at the RAI from 12-15 September, bringing together the global media, entertainment, and tech communities. With over 45K attendees from 170 countries last year, it’s the perfect conf to rub elbows with streaming, adtech, or metaverse devs.

SAN FRANCISCO, USA

Demuxed

Demuxed is a video tech conference that covers everything from encoding to playback. Last year’s talks explored topics like video content authenticity, boosting CDN performance, and live streaming with WebGPU. Judging by past editions, this year’s Demuxed will be fire too.

KRAKÓW, POLAND

RTC.ON

The list couldn’t be complete without RTC.ON – our very own conference focused on WebRTC, streaming & AI development. The third edition is coming to Kraków, Poland, this fall. Get ready to meet us, join practical workshops, and listen to talks by top multimedia devs. And yes, there will be a boat afterparty to wrap it all up. The dates are yet to be announced, so keep an eye out for updates! :)

Thanks for making it this far!

Happy streaming :)
